Writing melodies when you are not a musician
Posted by Gnayss (Producer) in beat-making
You don't need formal music training to write great melodies. My approach:
1. Hum or whistle ideas into your phone
2. Use a simple scale (minor pentatonic works for everything)
3. Start with 3-4 notes, then add complexity
4. Study melodies you love - what makes them catchy?
5. Use MIDI packs as starting points (then modify!)
Some of the best-selling beats on beatcorelab have simple but effective melodies. Complexity doesn't equal quality.
Are you a trained musician or self-taught? How do you approach melody?
