Layering kicks for maximum impact
Posted by Edmore Quinn (Producer) in production-tips
A punchy kick is the backbone of any hip-hop beat. My layering technique:
1. Low kick: Clean sub thump (80-100Hz)
2. Mid kick: Body and punch (100-300Hz)
3. High kick: Click/attack (2-5kHz)
Blend with volume, then glue with a bus compressor. High-pass the top layers, low-pass the bottom.
This technique works great for the hard-hitting beats I upload to beatcorelab. The low end translates well across different playback systems.
What's your kick processing chain?
